The Most Common Crimes During the Holiday Season

|

The holidays are filled with festive celebrations with loved ones, gift shopping, and long vacations out of town or even out of state. However, this time of year is also associated with a substantial increase in criminal activity.

The following are some of the most common crimes during the holiday season:

  • DUI – Alcohol consumption and holiday gatherings typically go hand in hand, which is why there is a significant rise in drunk driving accidents and DUI arrests during this time of year. Law enforcement agencies in South Carolina and throughout each state increase the number of officers patrolling the streets and sobriety checkpoints to keep the road safe. If you plan on drinking at a festive event, have a sober friend pick you up or request a ride in the Uber or Lyft app.

  • Theft – The pressures of holiday shopping can cause some people to take advantage of busy crowds and overwhelmed security staff at malls and stores to commit shoplifting. Leaving gifts in the car can result in vehicle theft. On the other hand, since online shopping has gained popularity over the last few years, packages that arrive daily at doorsteps can be stolen by “porch pirates.” Lastly, identity theft cases have grown with more people spending money online.

  • Burglary – Many people spend their holidays away from their homes for the weekend or even for a few weeks. Burglars see this as an opportunity to scout for unoccupied homes, break-in, and steal prized possessions. However, many modern homes are equipped with doorbell cameras and security systems. In addition, fellow neighbors could be on the lookout for suspicious activity while the homeowner is away.

  • Robbery – Since people may be carrying more money on them during the holidays, robbers may attempt to try to steal from such individuals on the street, in parking lots, or in other public spaces.

  • Domestic Violence – Spending more time with family members and the stress of getting gifts can lead to domestic violence incidents during the winter months. The holidays tend to exacerbate family tension, alcohol and drug use, and financial struggles, causing some people to violently lash out at loved ones.
